Plant this Herb Today

Garlic is Powerful Medicine!

Garlic is the one herb I make sure to plant each year. It is easy to forget what powerful medicine is contained in this common kitchen herb. Every time I use garlic I am reminded how simple and effective herbs can be on the homestead.

Garlic has found a place in our pantry as healthful food, microbe fighter, heart tonic and garden friend. Many people are familiar with garlic’s culinary uses in classic Italian cuisine. It pairs well in food and formulas alongside other antimicrobial herbs such as basil, oregano, rosemary, sage and thyme.

In the garden, garlic pulls double duty as a companion plant both boosting flavor and growth as well as repelling rodents, insects and other pests.

A common herbwife remedy is Garlic Mullein Ear Oil for ear discomfort and Garlic Honey Syrup for winter crud and congestion.

Garlic is also a key ingredient in the popular “Magic Water.” Magic Water is a trendy version of the age-old remedy used for millennia by chicken keepers, homesteaders and my grammy for ailing poultry and other animals. (Do your own research as some animals cannot have this herb).
